What Is a Class 7 MOT?

A Class 7 MOT is an annual test for larger light commercial vehicles. It checks whether the vehicle meets the legal requirements for road safety and environmental standards.

This type of MOT testing is most common for vans and commercial vehicles with a design gross weight between 3,001kg and 3,500kg. That includes many models used by trades, couriers, fleet operators and local businesses.

If you drive a larger van, such as some Ford Transit models, you may need a Class 7 MOT test rather than a standard Class 4 MOT. The right MOT class depends on the vehicle’s weight, not just how it looks or how it is used.

What Vehicles Need a Class 7 MOT?

Class 7 vehicles are goods vehicles over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg design gross weight. This weight is the maximum allowed weight of the vehicle when fully loaded. It includes the vehicle, driver, passengers, tools, equipment and goods.

Common light commercial vehicles LCVs that may need a Class 7 MOT include:

  • Larger panel vans
  • Long-wheelbase vans
  • Some Ford Transit models
  • Luton vans
  • Larger goods vehicles used by trades and delivery firms

A small van may only need a Class 4 MOT. A heavier commercial vehicle may need a different test. If you are not sure, check the vehicle plate, handbook or V5C document.

Why Is a Class 7 MOT a Legal Requirement?

A valid MOT is a legal requirement for most vehicles once they reach the required age. For Class 7 vehicles, the first test is normally due when the vehicle is three years old. After that, it must pass an MOT every 12 months.

Driving Without an MOT

Driving a vehicle without a valid MOT can lead to fines. It may also affect insurance cover. More importantly, it can put the driver, passengers and other road users at risk.

Safe for the Road

A Class 7 MOT ensures that larger vans and light commercial vehicles are safe enough to stay on the road. These vehicles often carry heavier loads and cover high mileage, so regular checks are important.

What Does a Class 7 MOT Include?

A Class 7 MOT includes checks on key safety and emissions areas. The tester will inspect the vehicle to see whether it meets the required road safety and environmental standards.

The test can include checks on:

  • Lights and indicators
  • Brake lights
  • Steering and suspension
  • Tyres and tread depth
  • Braking efficiency
  • Seatbelts and seats
  • Windscreen, wipers and washers
  • Mirrors and visibility
  • Exhaust and emissions
  • Vehicle structure and body condition
  • Registration plates and VIN

The test does not check the engine, clutch or gearbox in detail. It also does not replace a service. A service looks at the condition of parts in more depth and can help prevent faults before they cause a failure.

Brakes, Tyres and Safety Checks

Brakes are a major part of the Class 7 MOT test. The tester will assess braking efficiency and check that the vehicle can stop safely. They will also inspect visible brake components where possible.

Brake Checks

Worn brake pads discs, damaged brake lines or uneven braking can cause a vehicle to fail.

Tyre Checks

Tyres are also checked carefully. The tread depth must meet the legal minimum. Tyres must also be the right type, size and load rating for the vehicle. Cuts, bulges or exposed cords can lead to a fail.

Commercial Vehicles

For commercial vehicles, tyre condition matters even more. A van carrying tools, goods or materials needs strong tyres that can handle the load safely.

Why Vehicles Fail a Class 7 MOT

Many vehicles pass their MOT first time. However, some fail because of simple issues that could have been spotted earlier.

Common Failures

Common reasons for failure include worn tyres, faulty brake lights, poor braking performance, damaged suspension parts, broken wipers, low screen wash or excessive emissions.

Pre MOT Checks

Before booking your Class 7 MOT, it is worth checking the basics. Make sure all lights work. Check tyre condition and tread depth. Top up washer fluid. Look for warning lights on the dashboard.

These quick checks can help reduce the risk of a failed test. View our car checking page for more supoprt.
