A Class 4 MOT is the most common MOT test in the UK. It applies to many everyday vehicles, including cars, small vans, motor caravans and some private passenger vehicles. If your vehicle is more than three years old, you will usually need a valid MOT certificate each year to keep it road legal.
At FW Abbott, we carry out MOT tests for drivers in Kettering and the surrounding areas. Our team checks your vehicle against required safety and environmental standards, helping you stay safe, legal and confident on the road.
What Is a Class 4 MOT Test?
A Class 4 MOT test checks whether your vehicle meets the legal standard for road use. It looks at important safety parts, as well as emissions and environmental standards.
The MOT does not prove that your vehicle will remain reliable for the next year. It only confirms that it met the required standard on the day of the test.

What Vehicles Need a Class 4 MOT?
Class 4 vehicles include many of the vehicles people drive every day. This can include cars, taxis, private hire vehicles, motor caravans, dual purpose vehicles, light goods vehicles and some 3-wheeled vehicles.
A Class 4 MOT can apply to goods vehicles that weigh no more than 3,000 kg design gross weight. Design gross weight means the maximum weight the vehicle is designed to carry when loaded. If your vehicle weighs more than this, it may need a different MOT class.
Class 4 Vehicles Explained
Class 4 vehicles are usually smaller road vehicles used for personal or light business use. This can include cars, small vans and dual purpose vehicles.
It can also include motor caravans and certain private hire vehicles, depending on their size, seating and design gross weight.
Light Goods Vehicles and Weight Limits
Many light goods vehicles fall into Class 4 if they do not exceed 3,000 kg design gross weight. If the vehicle weighs more than this, it may fall into Class 7 instead.
This is where many van owners get confused. Class 4 or Class 7 depends on the vehicle’s approved weight, not just how it looks or how it is used.

When Might You Need a Class 4A MOT?
You may need a Class 4A MOT if your vehicle has specific seating or seat belt requirements. This is more common for certain passenger-carrying vehicles than normal cars.
If your vehicle has been adapted or carries passengers for work, it is always best to confirm the correct MOT class before the test.
What Does a Class 4 MOT Check?
A Class 4 MOT test checks key parts of your vehicle. This includes brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, mirrors, seat belts, emissions, registration plates and windscreen condition.
The tester will also check other safety items to make sure your vehicle meets the required legal standard.

Commercial Vehicles and MOT Classes
Some commercial vehicles need a Class 4 MOT, while others need a different test. Smaller vans and light goods vehicles may be Class 4, as long as they meet the weight rules.
Class 7 MOT
Larger vans and heavier commercial vehicles may need a Class 7 MOT or another test type. FW Abbott can help you understand which MOT applies before you book.
